The Best Books to Keep Your Child Engaged This Summer

The Summer Slide

Summer is a time for children to unwind, savour nature, explore new places, and engage in play. However, the Summer Slide is a potential issue that should be addressed, inshaAllah. Unfortunately, without taking action to prevent it, all the effort kids have put in for a whole year could go to waste. Reading can significantly reduce this loss.

Reading is Transformative!

The first divine directive given to Prophet Muhammad ﷺ was “Iqra” (Read!). Prophet Muhammad ﷺ, who was unable to read himself, taught others how to read. But this reading was no simple act like the cognitive act of reading today that mostly involves the eyes and the brain. Prophet Muhammad ﷺ taught people how to read with their hearts so they could recognize their Creator, Allah ﷻ.

One of the building blocks of reading with the heart involves the act of reading with the eyes. It is one of the important developmental milestones in the holistic development of children. Knowing how to read well promotes the love of reading and opens a variety of venues to connect with our Creator ﷻ.

There are many other advantages to reading. Improving memory, expanding vocabulary, aiding concentration and focus, and developing solid writing skills are just some of its benefits. Why not take advantage of the beautiful summer weather and read outside? This simple activity can be enjoyed in a variety of settings, such as under a tree, during a long trip, or even on a boat.

We have created a list of age-appropriate books for our students as part of our Summer Reading Challenge 2023 to prevent the Summer Slide and foster a love of reading. Please feel free to use our list of suggested reading materials! Happy Reading!
